We, the undersigned members of the Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group (BiEPAG), stand in strong solidarity with the students of Serbian universities in their fight for the consolidation of democracy, prosperity, and stability.
BiEPAG is grounded in the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. It adheres to values that are common to a society in which pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality prevail. We fully recognize these values in the demands of Serbian students.
We also call upon the European Union—especially the European Commission and the European Parliament—to live up to its self-proclaimed role as a promoter of democracy and the rule of law. The EU must unequivocally support the student protests in Serbia and prioritize the principles of democracy and rule of law over the stability of an authoritarian regime.
